Game Setup
Welcome to the DireLands, a campaign setting gripped by a supernatural ice age where the flickering warmth of civilization is as fragile as the truth. Here, in the imperial capital of Trinisius, the sacred Jhion Order—the scientists and keepers of ancient cosmic wisdom—toil to power the nation of Bressus’ survival. But beneath the polished marble of the Great Library of Diun and the industrial hiss of the Foster Gaer military docks, a cold rot is spreading. A prominent scholar has vanished. And you, stepping into the shadows as independent eyes, are all that stands between an uncaring empire and the truth.
The request to meet in the fog-shrouded, gas-lit Weeping Willow Park was not surprising; many shady deals take place in that seedy district. What was surprising was the source: Arch-Scholar Vaelen, a ranking foot acolyte of the Jhion Order, requesting a secret rendezvous. Your instructions were absolute: seek the man with a red chrysanthemum pinned to his lapel, and speak the passcode: “The Feet are in service to Ion.”
As you cross into Trinisius, nestled hard against the towering Ruike Mountain Range, the bitter chill of the elevation catches in your throat. Your breath blossoms into heavy mist, joining the fog of the evening. But as twilight descends, the sheer majesty of the city takes your breath away. Outside these walls, the world is a wasteland of trash, filth, and despair due to the oppressive rule of the Witch-Queen. Here, the streets are pristine, swept clean by an unseen hand. It is immediately clear why they call this place the Jewel of the Empire.
Then, the true wonder of Trinisius reveals itself.
An elderly lamplighter moves down the cobblestone path of the park. He carries a bulky, heavy iron rod attached to a strange backpack. With a sharp clack-hiss, a spark jumps from the mechanism—a rare, impossible technology found nowhere else in the known world. He touches it to the glass housings lining the walkway.
With a soft, rhythmic thrum, the mysterious lanterns roar to life one by one. To anyone born outside the Jhion Order, it looks like pure magic. There is no wood, no wax, no oil. A strange, invisible gas feeds a brilliant, steady flame that bathes the park in an unnatural, warm emerald glow. Even the military guards patrolling the perimeter carry bulky, iron-bored pistols—weapons that can shatter armor with a clap of thunder, a level of metallurgy and engineering that borders on the miraculous.
The lamplighter doesn’t even turn his head to acknowledge you as you pass. He simply continues his mechanical ritual, the artificial brightness of the gaslights cutting through the dense fog rising from the docks far below, casting long, twisting shadows into the weeping willows.
About DireLands Fantasy Campaign Setting
DireLands is a system agnostic, dark fantasy tabletop roleplaying campaign setting. It was created by Adam P. Campbell in 2024. DireLands is set in a land that is in the final century of an ice age that saw the rise of the Witch-Queen who subjugated the three realms’ populations and cast out the demi-human races. The Triumvirate rose in the last century and liberated two of the three nations, but after their victory, they have become corrupt themselves.
