- Plot:
- Act I: The Theft & The Awakening
- The Inciting Incident: With the world on the verge of World War III, cybersecurity specialist Daniel Kellner steals a piece of alien tech and files detailing human-alien contact (going back to Roswell) from the Wardex Corporation—a shadow arm of the U.S. government.
- The Hunt Begins: Wardex CEO Noah Scanlon brands Daniel a foreign spy, forcing him and his girlfriend, Jane Blankenship, into hiding at a convent.
- The Viral Incident: In Kansas City, meteorologist Margaret Fairchild has a bizarre encounter with a cardinal that triggers latent psychic powers (telepathy, omni-linguistic speech). She speaks an alien language live on-air, goes viral, and becomes a prime target for Wardex agents before escaping.
- Act II: The Psychic Hunt & The Black Site Escape
- The Connection: Daniel tells Jane that Wardex is experimenting on live aliens and reverse-engineering tech. Meanwhile, CEO Scanlon uses an alien device to psychically link with Jane, tracking the couple to a hotel.
- The Capture: Jane manages to escape with a second stolen alien device, but Daniel is captured by Wardex.
- The Breakout: Margaret’s growing powers give her visions of Daniel. She tracks him to a black site, breaks him out by mind-controlling their pursuers into standing down, and they barely survive a brutal car ramming by Scanlon’s henchman, Casper Boyd.
- Act III: The Childhood Twist & The Truth
- The Safehouse: Daniel and Margaret are rescued by a rogue faction of Wardex whistleblowers led by Hugo Wakefield.
- The Big Reveal: Hidden in a warehouse that replicates Margaret’s childhood home, Margaret recovers her memories. Turns out, she and Daniel were abducted as kids and given these powers. Bonus twist: those weird animals they saw growing up? Shapeshifting aliens monitoring them.
- Act IV: Disclosure Day
- The Final Stand: The team infiltrates Margaret’s old TV studio to launch a global broadcast called “Disclosure Day.”
- The Power Play: Scanlon cuts the grid, but Jane arrives in the nick of time with her stolen alien device to juice the power back up. Scanlon accepts defeat and just watches, while his henchman Boyd walks out in a huff.
- The Climax: The broadcast goes live, revealing decades of government cover-ups and successfully halting the imminent world war. The whistleblowers reveal a freed alien, who passes a final, cryptic message to Daniel and Margaret.
- The Cliffhanger/Ending: With the entire world glued to the screen, Margaret looks into the camera to deliver the message, ending the film on a single word: “Listen.”
- Act I: The Theft & The Awakening
- Notes:
- Spielberg was inspired by the 2017 article “Glowing Auras and ‘Black Money’: The Pentagon’s Mysterious U.F.O. Program”, published in The New York Times
- After receiving the initial treatment from Spielberg via email, Koepp would develop forty-two drafts for the film’s screenplay, the most of his career.
