The stranger who passed you on the street today might have been a monster, but the person who whispered a sudden, terrifying warning in your ear might have been something far older, and far more divine.
Intro
Welcome to Eviliv3 Play, a celebration of my favorite tabletop role-playing games. This is a sister channel to Eviliv3. Subscribe if you’re new to the channel, because today I am presenting the hidden truth behind Angels and Demons, a fundamental element of the Celestial Realm within Ævum Malum, my modern, urban dark fantasy tabletop roleplaying game campaign setting.

In the modern world of Ævum Malum, society is perfectly comfortable with religion in the abstract. People go to church, they listen to sermons, and they read ancient texts about divine protectors and infernal tempters. But the moment someone claims to have actually seen an angel, or heard the voice of a demon, society shuts them out. They are labeled as crazy, dismissed as insane, or feared as dangerous devil worshippers. None of them are taken seriously by civilized society.
But the terrifying truth for your players to uncover is that they are very real, and they are locked in a permanent, silent battle with each other right beneath our noses.
When these celestial beings come to Earth, they operate under strict cosmic laws and heavy limitations. They cannot simply manifest in their true glory without tearing the fragile fabric of reality. Instead, they must adapt. Some choose to adopt physical, corporeal bodies—looking, dressing, and acting exactly like everyday humans to completely blend in. They might look like a detective in a worn trench coat, or a ruthless corporate executive. Others refuse physical form entirely, existing strictly as spiritual entities that communicate entirely through jarring visions, auditory apparitions, or sudden, overwhelming impressions.
The fundamental difference between them lies in how they treat humanity’s greatest gift: free will.
Angels are the embodiments of divine intent, tasked with maintaining balance and guiding mortals without ever overriding their agency. They refuse to manipulate or command. When an angel feels it is absolutely necessary to intervene, they do so with incredible subtlety. They act as guardians or advisors, stepping into a person’s life just long enough to inform them of critical events, offer missing pieces of information, or provide quiet protection. They nudge choices; they do not dictate actions.
Demons, on the other hand, are the grand orchestrators of manipulation. They act in opposition to the angels, constantly plotting, tempting, and shaping circumstances to actively influence human behavior. Yet, they too are bound by the cosmic laws of the Celestial Realm—they cannot outright force a mortal to act. Every corruption must be a choice. This is why demonology and devil worship possess such a dark allure in the shadows of our world; demons do grant genuine power, wealth, and worldly influence, but it always comes at the cost of the mortal’s ultimate fate.
Yet, despite their bitter warfare, angels and demons share a terrifying secret. Both forces are acutely aware of the Void—that boundless, silent emptiness that predates creation and constantly presses against reality, seeking its complete destruction. Neither side wants reality to collapse into nothingness. But while angels fight to stabilize existence, demons are entirely willing to toe the line. They delight in the desecration of God’s creation, manipulating human imagination and widening the cracks in reality just to watch us suffer, even as they play a dangerous game with the very apocalypse they wish to avoid.
Beyond the physical world, both sides are acutely aware of the immense, reality-shaping power humanity commands through the Ethereal Realm. Because this fluid space of dreams and myths is shaped entirely by the collective mortal unconscious, celestials seek to drag their shadow war directly into it, using mortals as proxies to battle each other and contain the encroaching Void. In rare and desperate instances, angels and demons will trigger an awakening in specific humans, gifting them fragments of divine or infernal power to serve as soldiers in this hidden theater.
However, this shortcut carries catastrophic, unseen consequences. Humanity is inherently tribal, and when gifted the fires of creation, they inevitably abuse it. Instead of uniting to battle the Void across the Corporeal and Ethereal planes, awakened humans turn these miracle powers on one another, fueling ancient biases and petty factions. Demons weaponize this tribalism, taking sadistic pleasure in watching mortals tear themselves apart and using the chaos against the angels. Meanwhile, the angels watch in profound frustration, ever striving to offer a path of clarity and directional purpose for humanity’s own survival.
Tragically, not all humans understand the stakes, and fewer still even care. While the very architecture of God’s creation is being fought for by the hungry Maw of the Void, humanity’s relentless urge to divide into tribes is proving to be their true undoing—blinding them to the cosmic horrors at the door and turning them away from saving themselves in the process.
Ultimately, both forces use their direct and indirect revelations for a grander purpose: to awaken or corrupt specific humans who hold the potential to change the balance of power. Whether a celestial entity is trying to guide a human toward an incredible destiny, or drag them screaming down to their doom, humanity remains the ultimate prize—and the ultimate weapon—in a war that nobody believes is actually happening.
