The Columi

Join The Infernal Brotherhood of the Scruffy Looking, Nerf Herders as they explore Star Wars lore via their own personal Holocron. This episode will focus on the Columi.

Cold Open

Two million years before Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star, a species with massive brains and withered limbs looked out across the stars, declared every other civilization in the galaxy to be total barbarians, and went right back home.

Intro

Welcome back to The Infernal Brotherhood of the Scruffy-Looking Nerf Herders. Today we are turning back the galactic clock millions of years to examine one of the strangest and most arrogant species in the Expanded Universe: the Columi. From their incredible four-cerebrum brains to their brain-wave-powered repulsor pods, let’s explore why this ancient species abandoned galactic conquest long before the Republic was even born.

Discussion

Biology and Extreme Sensory Physiology

Standing up to 1.75 meters tall, a modern Columi is instantly recognizable by a massive cranial cavity that accounts for more than a third of its total height. Behind prominent temple veins and large, lidless black eyes lies a brain boasting four distinct cerebrums and over one hundred specialized lobes. Their vision is so remarkably hyper-evolved that they can view the entire electromagnetic spectrum. This unique trait allows them to literally ‘hear’ by visually analyzing soundwaves and radio frequencies through light spectrums. However, this total focus on mental growth came at a devastating physical cost. Over millennia, their arms and legs withered into boneless, jelly-like appendages unable to support their weight even in the low gravity of their homeworld, Columus. Their primary vital organs—including their lungs and heart—were even drawn upward closer to the cranium to maximize cognitive efficiency.

Evolutionary Progression to the Canopy

Long before they developed giant brains, the Columi evolved from small, herbivorous reptiles crawling through the muddy low-gravity marshes of Columus. To survive early predators, they used buoyant bellies to slide across swamp mud before eventually rising on their hind legs to pluck fruit from tall flora. Over thousands of years, they moved their nesting sites entirely into the trees, swapping heavy tails for prehensile ones and developing agile hands instead of sharp claws. Once they mastered primitive toolmaking, their evolutionary pace exploded. They shed their tails, stood upright, and built magnificent spired cities supported on towering pylons anchored deep in the bedrock, rising hundreds of meters above the dark, muddy jungle canopy below.

Early Interstellar Travel & The Great Isolation

By 2,000,000 BBY—and again around 100,000 BBY—the Columi achieved interstellar space travel, sending out deep-space scouts long before humans or Duros ever unlocked hyperdrive technology. They were among the very first species to explore the cosmos. However, their galactic journey ended in deep disappointment. When their explorers made contact with young worlds like Coruscant and Duro, they found early primitive civilizations they viewed as crude, unthinking barbarians. Horrified by what they perceived as galactic ignorance—and thoroughly uncomfortable with the higher gravity of other worlds—the Columi abandoned exploration altogether. Some historians even believe they intentionally checked their own expansion to avoid drawing the wrath of ancient cosmic powers like the Celestials. Disillusioned, they locked themselves away on Columus to pursue pure intellect in total isolation.

Neural Hoverpods, Cloning, and Political Gridlock

Back on Columus, physical labor became an object of absolute social disgust. To a Columi, the only honorable pursuit in existence was pure, unadulterated thought. Because their limbs were completely useless, they relied entirely on brain-wave-powered repulsorlift chairs and mental hoverpods. These pods were controlled wirelessly through radio signals emitted directly from their complex brains—technology so refined that non-Columi minds could eventually adapt it. Politically, Columus operated as a hyper-logical direct democracy where every citizen had an equal voice. This led to absurd policy discussions that dragged on for years or even decades over trivial matters. To maintain their population without physical effort, they relied almost exclusively on high-tech cloning facilities, which became strictly regulated state assets during times of galactic unrest like the Clone Wars.

Imperial Collaboration and Outlaw Renegades

By the rise of the Galactic Empire, Columi civilization was largely viewed as an ancient, eccentric backwater. Yet, when Palpatine’s Empire turned its eyes toward Columus, the usually indecisive species reacted with shocking speed. To preserve their isolation and avoid Imperial subjugation, they formed a swift pact, offering high-level administrative thinkers and logical analysts to the Imperial bureaucracy. Imperial propaganda officers like Obo Rin even tried to claim the Empire made first contact with them, attempting to erase their ancient history. But not all Columi stayed home. Notable renegades broke away: the infamous crime lord Boss Tosk outfitted a combat repulsorsuit to dominate the Tapani Sector criminal underworld, while other rogue thinkers lent their extraordinary mathematical minds to the Rebel Alliance or designed hyper-advanced droids for galactic corporations like Chiewab Amalgamated.

Ultimately, the story of the Columi serves as a compelling caution in Star Wars lore: a species that achieved ultimate intellectual ascension, only to become completely paralyzed by their own arrogance and physical decay, watching the galaxy pass them by from inside their hoverpods.
