In the Star Wars galaxy, the Jedi are often defined by their skill with a lightsaber. But for some, the greatest weapon isn’t a blade—it’s their own life-sustaining atmosphere. Master Ooroo was a creature of peace, a scholar who lived behind glass, yet he would become the catalyst for the Republic’s survival during its darkest hour. To save his apprentice and an entire army, he did the unthinkable: he turned his own breath into a weapon of mass destruction. Today, we look at the “Martyr of Kirrek.”

Intro

Greetings, my fellow Scruffy-Looking Nerf Herders, and welcome back to The Infernal Brotherhood! Today, we look at the man who stood in his way. 5,000 years before the Battle of Yavin, the Jedi Order was a very different organization. Among their most respected masters was a Celegian named Ooroo. He was a floating brain in a jar, a master of ancient scrolls, and the mentor to the legendary Odan-Urr. His story is one of the most selfless sacrifices in Jedi history.

The Scholar in the Tank

Ooroo was a Celegian, a species so rare in the Jedi Order that he was practically a living curiosity. Evolution on his homeworld had taken a strange turn: his people were highly intelligent, telepathic, and resembled floating brains with long, delicate tentacles.

However, there was a catch. Celegians breathe cyanogen, a gas that is lethal to almost every other life form. Conversely, the oxygen we breathe is a deadly poison to them. Because the Jedi headquarters on Ossus was oxygen-rich, Ooroo had to live inside a specialized, crystalline life-support tank. He was a master who could never touch his students, forever separated by a layer of glass.

The Mentor of Odan-Urr

Ooroo’s greatest legacy was his student, the Draethos Jedi Odan-Urr. The two were a perfect match—both preferred the quiet hum of a library to the heat of a battlefield. Odan-Urr was content to stay on Ossus forever, buried in ancient Sith scrolls, but Ooroo knew that a Jedi’s duty wasn’t just to read history, but to protect it.

He pushed Odan-Urr out of his comfort zone, sending him to the Koros system to aid Empress Teta. Ooroo understood that while knowledge is power, action is the application of that power. It was this push that allowed Odan-Urr to rediscover the lost art of Battle Meditation, a skill that would eventually save the Republic.

Visions of the Shadow

While separated, both master and apprentice were plagued by the same terrifying Force visions: the funeral of Marka Ragnos and the rise of a new Sith threat. While the Republic Senate mocked these “dreams” as the fantasies of a young Jedi, Ooroo took them with deadly seriousness.

He left the tranquility of Ossus and traveled to the Koros system to stand by his student. He warned Empress Teta that if the Sith returned, the war would cross the very fabric of hyperspace. He wasn’t just a teacher anymore; he was a general preparing for a conflagration that had been dormant for a thousand years.

The Battle of Kirrek

When Naga Sadow’s Massassi warriors finally descended upon the planet Kirrek, the Republic forces were utterly overwhelmed. These Sith behemoths were mindless, fueled by Sadow’s dark magic, and immune to Odan-Urr’s Battle Meditation. The defensive lines at the Citadel were breaking, and the Massassi were swarming the walls.

Ooroo saw the inevitable. He realized that his presence on the battlefield, confined to his tank, was no longer enough. In a moment of supreme clarity, he ordered the Republic defenders and his beloved apprentice to fall back.

The Final Breath

As the Massassi closed in to shatter the tank and kill the “helpless” Jedi, Ooroo acted first. Using his own tentacles, he punctured the crystalline glass of his life-support chamber.

The pressurized cyanogen—the very air he needed to live—exploded outward. Ooroo used the Force to whip up a localized gale, driving the toxic yellow mist directly into the lungs of the Sith army. The Massassi, lethal as they were, died instantly. For Ooroo, the end was slower and more painful. As the cyanogen left the tank, oxygen rushed in, burning his fragile form. He died in the arms of Odan-Urr, his only regret being that he would never again swim in the cyanogen seas of his homeworld.

Outro

Ooroo’s sacrifice wasn’t just about winning a battle; it was about ensuring that his apprentice lived to build the Great Library of Ossus. Because Ooroo died on Kirrek, Odan-Urr lived to preserve Jedi knowledge for another thousand years. Today, a giant bronzium statue of Ooroo stands on the Processional Way of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant—a permanent reminder that sometimes, the greatest strength is found in our most fragile moments.

What do you think of Ooroo’s unique physiology? Is he the most selfless Jedi in the Legends canon? Let me know in the comments!
