Game Setup
Last time on The Lightless Beacon: Our investigators were travelling to Rockport aboard the SS Essex County, a mixed passenger and cargo vessel when it foundered on the rocks damaging its hull. The Beacon Island Lighthouse ceased to cast its light fifteen minutes prior, causing this crash. As the ship began sinking, the crew loaded passengers on life rafts and directed them to Beacon Island. With a storm coming, it would prove dangerous. The investigators ran into something metal under the water on their way to the island and couldn’t get the boat free. They were forced to swim and more specifically washed up on shore trying to swim. As the storm began to pick up, they headed toward the lighthouse which had a small light on at its base. They found evidence of occupants but no one was to be seen. As they investigated more, they discovered strange tracks mixed with human footprints. Writings from a Mr. Cassidy to antiques dealers about selling rare gold coins. Some of which were discovered in the lighthouse. They had an obelisk on one side and strange sigils on the other. There were clear signs of a struggle with blood in the kitchen and bullets in the hallway floor. It looked like someone was watercoloring disturbing images of man or fish like beings peering in the window or stalking the thicket. Further evidence about investigation between the inhabitants and distrust all around was discovered and kept private. Then an odd fish creature burst in and attacked them. They worked together to kill it, but through their searching another entered and killed Frederick. With unknown beasts about, missing light house attendants, evidence gathered but not shared with everyone and now a dead investigator, the investigators must work together if they want to survive.
About The Lightless Beacon
Welcome to The Lightless Beacon, this year’s Call of Cthulhu scenario for the first Greg Stafford
Day—a day to celebrate the life and works of Greg and The Chaosium he founded way back in 1975. We hope you’ll be able to gather some friends and enjoy this scenario together.
The Lightless Beacon is set on Beacon Island, near Rockport, Massachusetts, on April 12th, 1926. It is intended as a short introductory scenario for novice Keepers, new players, or both! Experienced players and Keepers should also find something to enjoy here, too. Designed to be run in as little as one hour, this game is ideal for those who don’t have the time for a longer game session, or are just building up their confidence with the Call of Cthulhu RPG.
While The Lightless Beacon is presented as a standalone adventure and comes with four pre-generated investigators (enabling you to dive right in), it could also form the start of a new campaign, as it throws together complete strangers and plunges them into the world of the Cthulhu Mythos before they have a chance to catch their breath. There’s a mystery to solve, a threat to overcome, and a glimpse at the true horrors lurking in the darkness: all key themes of a good Call of Cthulhu adventure!
About Call of Cthulhu
Chaosium’s Horror Roleplaying in the Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft
The Old Ones ruled the earth aeons before the rise of man. Traces of their cyclopean cities can still be found on remote islands, buried amid the shifting desert sands, and in the frozen wastes of the polar extremes. Originally they came to this world from the stars. They sleep now, some deep within the earth or beneath the sea. When the stars are right they shall again walk the earth.
Call of Cthulhu is Chaosium’s tabletop roleplaying game based upon the worlds of H. P. Lovecraft. It is a game of secrets, mysteries, and horror. Playing the role of steadfast investigators, you travel to strange and dangerous places, uncover foul plots, and stand against the terrors of the Cthulhu Mythos. You encounter sanity-blasting entities, monsters, and insane cultists. Within strange and forgotten tomes of lore you discover revelations that man was not meant to know. You and your companions may very well decide the fate of the world.
