About DireLands Fantasy Campaign Setting
DireLands is a system agnostic, dark fantasy tabletop roleplaying campaign setting. It was created by Adam P. Campbell in 2024. DireLands is set in a land that is in the final century of an ice age that saw the rise of the Witch-Queen who subjugated the three realms’ populations and cast out the demi-human races. The Triumvirate rose in the last century and liberated two of the three nations, but after their victory, they have become corrupt themselves.

They do not kneel to crown or council, nor do they shackle the arcane to law—yet as the shadow of Bressus (BRESS-sus) grows and Locaston (LOW-cast-on) watches the borders, the ancient stewards of Faulest (FAW-lest) face a threat far more dangerous than war: the slow death of their own tradition.

Details
Spanning roughly twelve hundred and sixty miles from east to west and over a thousand miles north to south, Caelia is a massive expanse defined by sweeping plains, ancient forests, and rugged coastlines. Its population of thirteen million is a rich tapestry of cultures. Humans make up nearly half of the land’s inhabitants, alongside deep enclaves of elves, dwarves, halflings, and wilder races.
Caelia was never meant to be a single nation. For untold generations before the Beàrrta (BEE-och-te) ever set foot on Faulest, these first-nation peoples lived as self-governing, disparate tribes across the continent. But in the year 1073 A.M. or ‘After Men Arrived from the West’, history forced their hand.
When Locaston shifted its militaristic focus toward the western border following the unification of Bressus, the tribal elders realized that isolated clans would be swallowed whole. They formed the Biel Gos, a Caelian tribal collective—not to forge an aggressive empire, but to build safety in numbers. The capital city of Yurtheq, boasting a population of seven hundred and fifty thousand, now serves as the central gathering point where tribal representatives debate policy, trade, and collective defense against foreign powers.
What makes Caelia truly unique on the political stage of Faulest is its relationship with the arcane. In Locaston or Bressus, magic is strictly governed, institutionalized, or viewed with deep suspicion. In Caelia, magic is woven directly into daily life.
It stands as one of the only regions on the planet where magic exists as a way of life rather than a state-regulated practice. Druidcraft, elemental channeling, and ancient ancestral rites flourish freely here. Because all Caelian tribes share the ancient first-nation root language, their spellcasting traditions retain ancestral formulas that predate modern arcane academies, making Caelian shamans and sorcerers formidable and entirely unpredictable to foreign invaders.
Geographically, Caelia is framed by the treacherous Fuevarem (Few-uh-ver-um) Wildlands to the west, with vast ocean coastlines wrapping around its northern, eastern, and southern borders.
To the east lies the Udaha Peninsula, a rich and primordial sanctuary famous for its ancient elven populations and undisturbed forest canopy. Further along the coastline lies Sca Bay, a region ripe with vibrant marine life but shadowed by the terrifying presence of an active sea dragon hive. Rather than attempting to slay these leviathans, the coastal Caelian tribes navigate around them, using ancient rituals to placate the hive and share the waters. Down in the south, the sun-baked deserts of the Hunan peninsula are home to nomadic centaur tribes and elusive djinn who guard secret oases that predate written history.
Near the central wildlands of Leariss lies Moonrhu, a region shrouded by ancient fey forests and dense marshlands. Inhabited by humans, elves, and a surprisingly large halfling population, the Moonrhu people are fiercely reclusive fey-worshippers.
Their coming-of-age rites are harsh and unyielding: youth are cast out into the wilderness alone for a full week, forced to rely purely on the teachings of their elders to survive. Rumors persist that the Moonrhu carry fey blood in their veins, which would explain their uncanny ability to thrive in lands where the planar veil is paper-thin.
Yet, deep within its borders, Caelia faces a tragic internal crisis. While elders fight to preserve these ancient rites, proximity to the technologically advanced nation of Bressus is triggering an irreversible cultural shift. Caelia’s younger generation is increasingly adopting Bressan customs, language, and magi-tech, or blending it with their own heritage. To the elder council, this is not progress; it is the insidious erosion of everything they have fought to protect.
For Game Masters, Caelia offers incredible narrative depth. You can run political intrigue where players escort Caelian elders to Yurtheq while countering Bressan cultural spies or Locaston infiltrators. You can send an adventuring party into Sca Bay to negotiate with or survive against a displaced sea dragon, or challenge them with a survival arc in Moonrhu where they must endure a week in fey-warped marshlands.
Caelia stands at a knife’s edge between ancient heritage and modern encroachment. How long can a nation of free spirits hold off the empires pounding at its gates? Will the myriad of tribes return to war with each other or stay united in the Biel Gos? And finally, with the defeat of the Witch-Queen, do the tribes dare re-open trade with Locaston? Only your home campaign can answer these questions, as the future of these DireLands are in your hands!
